In September, State Secretary De Vries (Defence) decided to take part in the commemoration for the last time next year, the 65th jubilee anniversary of the end of World War II. His decision was heavily criticized by organizations and political groups. Recently, De Vries retracted his decision, with a final decision to be reached next year.
De Vries’ main concern is budgetary constraints within the Ministry of Defence. Supporting the Wageningen endeavour is also labour intensive. In addition, the Ministry of Defence wants to focus on the annual national Veterans’ Day held in Den Haag in June.
